EUROPEAN BANK FOR RECONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT (EBRD)

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development was established in 1991 in the wake of the fall of Berlin Wall in order to support countries in Eastern and Central Europe with the transition into a functioning market economy and democracy.

EBRD is owned by 64 countries together with two intergovernmental institutions, the European Union (EU) and the European Investment Bank (EIB). The bank is headquartered in London and focuses its financial activities towards approximately 30 countries from Central Europe to Central Asia and North Africa.

EBRD mobilizes foreign direct investments to targeted countries, supports privatization, restructuring and improved public services in addition to promoting an environmental friendly and sustainable development. The bank finances projects within sectors such as infrastructure, energy, transport, agriculture and environment.

There are great opportunities for Swedish companies to seek funding or participate in tenders organized by the EBRD. For instance, it can involve a loan to build wind farms in Ukraine or a public tender to upgrade the rail infrastructure in Kazakhstan. Business Sweden estimates that Swedish companies have the technical expertise, product and service quality, as well as efficiency required to be competitive in projects financed by the EBRD. According to EBRD, Swedish consultants are particularly strong in competitiveness considering they regularly win the contracts that they participate in.

After several years of strategic partnerships to stimulate an increased Swedish participation in the bank’s projects, we have a well-established relationship with the EBRD. Business Sweden can help Swedish companies by monitoring relevant and upcoming procurements, analyse business opportunities and decision processes as well as identify appropriate partners to form consortia.

Please contact our office in Brussels to discuss your opportunities to participate in projects funded by the EBRD.
