Business Sweden in Romania

Ranking 7th in the European Union in terms of population, Romania is one of the largest consumer markets in the EU, as well as an attractive manufacturing hub. Romania is simply too large to be ignored.

Romania’s unique combination of a sizeable marketplace and favourable production or procurement alongside with its geographical and cultural proximity to Western Europe is expected to make it an interesting business location for many years to come.

Romania is one of the countries having the highest economic growth in emerging Europe. In 2013 and 2014, external demand has been driving growth; gradual shift toward domestic demand is foreseen for 2016-2017. During the first quarter of 2015, Romania’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.3 percent compared to the same period last year, evolution supported by trade, car service, transportation, hotels, restaurants and industry.

There are approximately 1200 active companies with Swedish capital in Romania employing more than 10 000 people. Most of the big Swedish export oriented companies are present in Romania. In the 90s, most of the companies came to Romania for sales, and later on, they developed production facilities, R&D and after sales services (e.g. Ericsson). Some of them have production facilities there e.g. Electrolux, H&M, Autoliv, Trelleborg, Bufab. Increasingly, service oriented companies are established on the market e.g. Medicover, Provis Energy, Securitas, Husse and Diaverum.

There are a few sectors that offer particularly good business opportunities for Swedish companies in Romania: Energy & Environment, IT Services & Software, Health and Life Science, Industrial Equipment and Vehicles, Wood and Furniture and Textiles.

Scandinavia and especially Sweden have a very good reputation in Romania. Swedes are regarded as professional, reliable and honest business people. Sweden is considered a well-developed country constantly preoccupied by environment and nature preservation.
