Portugal is a privileged country with its geographical position which brings strategic benefits to energy production. The country presents a variety in its renewable sources such as solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and biomass, which stands for a greater part of the total energy generation. In 2015 14.9% came from hydro, 11.6% eolic and 11.4% natural gas, representing an increasing trend of renewables used in energy production. It is a strategic sector for the national economy and that is getting well-known outside the country.
Regarding energy intensity, Portugal's high investment in technologies that exploit renewable sources of energy and the low energy consumption in the residential sector, compared to the rest of Europe, show an energy intensity of the productive economy 27% higher than the EU average. In terms of energy efficiency Portugal has an overall goal of reducing primary energy consumption by 25%.
The rollout of smart meters in Portugal is not mandatory and still there are only pilot projects being done. The European Union has classified Portugal as a dynamic mover, meaning that the Portuguese market is characterized by a clear path towards full rollout of smart metering. Some smart metering services are already offered to consumers by the leading distribution company EDP.
E-mobility is on the Portuguese agenda. Today there are about 4.500 electric cars circulating and more than 700 charging stations have so far been installed in the larger cities in Portugal. Indications from the Portuguese government show future investments and initiatives to be made within the upcoming years within e-mobility.
