Every year, Mexico and Central America is hit by natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, droughts and hurricanes. This has made disaster management and proactive actions towards climate change a priority of the governments and international aid agencies in the region.

In Sweden, there are several companies who have come a long way in developing solutions to decrease the effects of nature disasters. Therefore Business Sweden, together with the Embassies of Sweden to Mexico and Guatemala, and the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs carried out a Business Delegation from Sweden to Mexico and Guatemala on disaster resilience and relief solutions, in February 2017. The delegation was headed by Swedish Minister for Public Administration, Ardalan Shekarabi.

Eight Swedish companies and one university participated in the delegation: Texsolv, Swedish Net, Abem (Guideline Geo Group), SWE-CA, Scania, Geodesign, SCA, Ecoloo and the Linneaus University. They all offer innovative solutions to decrease the effects of natural disasters and climate change and in that way improve life quality. During the four day delegation the companies met with Mexican counterparts, decision makers, multilateral development banks and their implementing partners present in the region.

According to the participating companies the delegation was fruitful. It has given them interesting leads on future collaborations and businesses in the region. For example, Mr. Lars Kristersson, General Manager at Swedish company SWE-CA present in Guatemala said afterwards; ”In 20 years of doing business in Guatemala, we’ve never gotten so many good contacts and created new relationships as we’ve done in four days during this delegation” And Markus Selme, founder and CEO at Swedish Net said to Business Sweden that this delegation was the best he ever participated in.

Business Sweden would like to send a huge thank you to all participating companies, as well as to the Swedish Minister, for making this delegation successful. It is also important to mention the valuable engagement from Mexican decision makers, organizations and companies who provided the delegation with interesting speeches and constructive meetings.

Our hope and belief is that this delegation was the start of many fruitful collaborations. That actors in Sweden, Mexico and Guatemala can find new ways to jointly meet the increasing challenges and work towards improving the quality of life with innovative, Swedish solutions in the region.
