The Biogas track within the Environmental Technology Initiative focuses on biogas production and usage. There are several projects across the country, mainly in agriculture and landfill, but it is not currently a broadly used and accessible technology.

Through initial market research, biogas has been identified as a relevant area to promote export of Swedish environmental technology to Brazil. At the end of 2012, there were more than eight biogas projects in agriculture production realm and for plants for landfill biogas. Many more are planned, but for the time being the transformation of biogas into electricity is not economically viable.

Pig farms offer the highest production potential for biogas in agribusiness in Brazil and most are concentrated in the South. The landfills working with biogas are in big cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and Minas Gerais.

Biogas technology enables long-term, sustainable waste management that turns waste into a carbon-neutral energy resource. Biogas production and utilization, e.g. production of heat, electrical power and vehicle fuel, can function as a regional solution for waste to energy concepts in cities without existing gas infrastructure. Wherever natural gas infrastructure is available, it can be used to as a channel to distribute biogas e.g for transport purposes.

Swedish companies have cutting edge competence in upgrading technology, substrate optimization, process optimization as well as integrating and managing the whole system management. The fact that Brazilian companies are looking for solutions for biogas production opens up possibilities for foreign companies offering such solutions.
