Swedish Mining in Southern Africa

Africa has more than half of the world´s mineral reserves and Sub Saharan Africa is hence one of the largest mining markets in the world, with significant potential for growth.

In South Africa some 100 exploration and 20 development projects are currently taking place and the industry is expected to reach a total value of USD 27bn in 2015. Mining in South Africa is getting increasingly advanced and modern, especially with the development of the ultradeep mines. Innovative equipment and skills are needed to further enable safety, efficiency and profitability.

Botswana is the world’s leading diamond producer by value and there is a strong growth in demand for equipment and machinery. In Zambia there is continued expansion of copper mines, in Mozambique the focus is on coal mining and in Ghana there is an expansion in gold exploration activities. With improving business environment and increasing political stability, there are also more investments in exploration projects and mine developments in Angola and DRC.

Several Swedish players like Atlas Copco, Sandvik and Volvo have had a strong presence in the market for a significant time and they are well known for their innovative products and services. There are now vast opportunities to be explored by additional companies from Sweden. With a long and prosperous tradition in the mining industry, Swedish companies can provide highly competitive products and services to this market.
