Looking for more energy business in Africa?

an image
The demand for energy in Africa is enormous. Swedish companies have many of the solutions needed. The Energy for Africa programme is designed to support Swedish energy companies to increase their business in sub-Saharan Africa.

With around 64 percent of the population or more than 600 million people lacking access to electricity, Africa is in great need of sustainable energy solutions. Many countries have launched initiatives in order to increase the number of generated megawatts and electricity connections in Africa. Sweden´s partnership with the “Power Africa” initiative is one example of this. Other European countries have either joined this initiative and/or created their own programmes.

Many Swedish energy companies have voiced the need for increased Governmental support in order to strengthen their position in Sub-Saharan Africa. Swedish companies need support in gaining information & access to decision makers, and leverage on a strong position and a broad commitment within Power Africa”
The Swedish Energy for Africa programme is designed to meet this need and complement Sweden´s Power Africa partnership. It is run by Business Sweden, supported by government agencies, finance institutions and other promotional organisations (i.e. “Team Sweden”).

This is a long term membership program that facilitates for Swedish companies to do business within the energy sector in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).Through a Team Sweden approach, there is targeted support to key projects but widened focus where buyers are relevant for a larger company base.

Business Sweden carried out a study to identify some of the major business opportunities for Swedish companies in Sub-Saharan Africa. Based on this study and our existing networks, the programme will initially focus primarily on Southern Africa (South Africa, Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique); East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Ethiopia) and West Africa (Nigeria). Other countries may be included on a case by case basis.

By joining the programme, your company will get access to information on focused markets, upcoming tenders as well as local and regional networks. You will also be invited to seminars, workshops and delegations. All these activities are aimed at strengthening your position in the sub-Saharan region and your relationships with Power Africa representatives, financiers, utilities, independent power producers and regulators that will bring your company closer to winning business deals.

Joining the programme and accessing the support included is free of charge. This also includes participation in chosen events, though limitation to the number of participants for each event will apply. There will also be a possibility to add on extra services from Business Sweden.

During 2016, various activities were carried out to scope business opportunities in SSA. These include participation in seminars, meetings and delegations:

  • 30 March – Eskom Business Forum in Johannesburg
  • 17-19 May - Africa Utility Week Business Delegation in Cape Town
  • 21-22 September - East Africa Power and Industry Convention in Nairobi

Going forward and applying a more focussed approach, activities on the programme will include:

  • Closely monitoring country project opportunities and identifying key stakeholders and their needs at all levels
  • Strong support with sector specific clusters of the “Team Sweden” approach
  • Create awareness and connections to Swedish companies through lobbying
  • Developing a strategic approach based on client needs
  • Clear understanding of tender requirements and restrictions, and tender monitoring by “Team Sweden”
  • Performing local partner search/competitor analysis

The programme will initially run for 2 years, starting in 2016, after which the results will be evaluated. If proved successful it will be extended.

The Energy for Africa programme is open to companies and organisations with a serious interest in establishing and expanding their business in Africa. There is no limit on size or turnover. It is also possible for different divisions or subsidiaries of a company to join. Business Sweden however reserves the right to decide which companies to accept into the programme.
