Virtusize is a small but rapidly growing IT company that helps online shoppers pick the right size garment by providing a solution that visually illustrates the size and fit of clothing. Founded in 2011, the company has expanded to include a staff of about 20 people, building an impressive clientele of world leading online retail stores such as Topshop, Gant and Acne. It did not take long for Virtusize to take aim at Japan, the world’s fourth largest e-commerce market and leading fashion trendsetter, and decided to go for a Business Opportunity Project (BOP) as a first step in 2012.
Japan an important market for e-commerce
- With its high level of development, large market size and willingness to pay for quality the Japanese market was a natural target for us when it came to markets outside of Europe. It is the perfect platform for us to build our brand in Asia, says Andreas Olausson, Regional Manager Virtusize Asia Pacific.
Virtusize decided to build a close partnership with Business Sweden for their business development in Japan, which was initialized through the BOP. The response from the market quickly showed to be very positive and the demand for Virtusize’s fitting solution turned out to be larger than even Virtusize had expected. Online retailers soon lined up to meet with the Swedish IT startup.
The initial BOP-project in 2012 was followed up with participation in Swedish Fashion Week Tokyo in February 2013, organised by Business Sweden. Virtusize continued to use Business Sweden’s consultancy services as the business in Japan grew and presence developed from a Virtual Office to being incorporated in Japan in August 2013. Virtusize has step-by-step established a firm market presence in Japan with support from Business Sweden and continue to use Business Support Office (BSO) services.

Time management and swift action turned out to be key to success in the market as well as to achieve customer satisfaction. The rapidly growing e-commerce market waits for no one and expectations on Business Sweden were set accordingly.
Soon after completing the incorporation in Japan, Virtusize entered into an agreement with Business Sweden in Korea for continued support during the rapid expansion in Asia.
