More than 80 participants gathered in Prague for the seminar Swedish-Czech Waste Management Forum on May 18th, 2016. The event was arranged by Business Sweden together with Embassy of Sweden and in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic for the second time with the objective to create a platform for exchanging experiences and to promote cooperation between the Czech Republic and Sweden in the area of waste management.

Among the renowned guests were the Deputy Minister of Environment, Mr. Vladislav Smrž, the Head of Waste Management Department, Mr. Jaromír Manhart, the Waste Management Expert, Mr. Jan Maršák and Mr. Nils Lundkvist, Key Note Speaker from Sweden, the Waste Management Expert and Advisor and ex-director of the Waste Management of Stockholm City for approx. 30 years. The following Swedish companies were the main partners of the event: Flexus Balasystem, Adage, MRT System International, WTM, Scandinavian Enviro Systems, Presona , Götaverken Miljö with its mother company Babcock & Wilcox Vølund A/S. Furthermore representatives of the largest Czech waste management companies and regional companies and authorities as well as other main waste handling organizations in the Czech Republic attended the event.

Waste management represents one of the key pillars of sustainable development, which is also strongly reflected in the legislation of the European Union and national measures of its members. Sweden ranks among countries where an efficient waste management plays an important role not only in terms of national policy but also from the point of view of the business sector and the citizens. While Swedish households contribute to a high share of waste recycling, companies introduce new waste treatment technologies that bring both economic and environmental benefits.

Sustainable waste management systems, efficient treatment of waste and Swedish-Czech experiences in these areas were the main topics of presentations and discussions during the conference. The afternoon session was reserved for meetings between Czech and Swedish participants. Swedish companies presented their solutions to the most important local public and private stakeholders in the waste management sector and have met selected local potential customers and partners.

Overall, the forum was a major success and received a lot of positive feedback from the participants. The event created a platform for exchanging experience, establishing contacts and helped to promote Sweden as a role model within waste management. New valuable contacts have been established and the good reputation of the Swedish management within this sector in the Czech Republic has been strengthened.

‘Thank you very much for the arrangement. It was very interesting to be updated with the latest news on both legislation and intentions but also for technical matters which can fulfill the intentions presented from the authority. The practical setup with a mix of speakers and also time for informal meetings during the breaks works perfectly. For me it was beneficial and I would be happy to participate giving the opportunity another time. Once again thank you for the effort in this business segment.’ Robert Heeb and Per Lindgren, Sales Managers, Babcock & Wilcox Vølund and Götaverken Miljö
