Patient-specific implant takes on complex patient cases in Singapore

With increasing success in Sweden, OssDsign, designer and manufacturer of patient-specific regenerative implants, seeks to explore entry into growth markets in Asia. Keen to leverage on Singapore as a first starting point to develop partnerships and references before pursuing neighbouring markets, Business Sweden provided background information of the market, made introductions towards key opinion leaders, doctors and major hospitals and assisted with screening of an appropriate distributor capable of assisting OssDsign in the local market. As a result, OssDsign has recently recorded the sales of a first few implants for cranial reconstruction in the Singaporean and Malaysian markets and looking forward to ramping up sales further to make an impact not only in complex cases such as previous implant failures.

Dr. Thomas Engstrand, reconstructive plastic surgeon at Karolinska University Hospital has seen many implant failures and problems with existing techniques at his hospitals. Together with biomaterials researcher, Professor Håkan Engqvist and co-workers at Uppsala University, he gave rise to a more effective option with an innovative design and a bioactive calcium phosphate material with a chemical composition similar to human bone. Seeing promising results in patients, OssDsign is determined to make this available to more patients across the world.

Market knowledge and access to institutions

In close discussion with the OssDsign team, Business Sweden Singapore investigated the regulatory requirements and market potential of such a patient-specific implant locally. As the demand for better solutions are increasing, it was clear that Singapore is a strategic next step for the company.

Within a niche area such as cranial reconstruction, it is important to understand the requirements and also to reach out to relevant medical practitioners, in this case, neurosurgeons practicing in Singapore and the region. When Dr. Engstrand, OssDsign’s co-founder and Chief Medical Officer visited Singapore, Business Sweden assisted with arranging meetings with top neurosurgeons to discuss the application in detail. Dr. Engstrand also had the opportunity to present to the largest neurosurgery teams and departments at local hospitals and share clinical outcomes of the technique.

Apart from the successful inroads into neurosurgery, other areas of application were also discussed with local experts such as dental and facial application for jaw and plastic surgery applications respectively. “Each visit to Singapore has been enriched with fruitful discussions to advance medical care and increase the outreach of this technique. A neutral party for partner selection

After a thorough understanding of the regulatory requirements, the next step for OssDsign was to have a local representative in Singapore to serve the doctors and facilitate orders as the manufacturing facility is located in Sweden. With a few options being considered, OssDsign decided to be represented by a distributor; however, the right fit in terms of expertise, size, focus area and other considerations make a partner hard to come by. 

Business Sweden assisted with a thorough partner search, qualifying and recommending local distributors within the criteria as outlined by OssDsign. With further discussions and facilitated meetings, OssDsign appointed a reputable distributor to cover the Singaporean and Malaysian markets and have recently started delivering its first few implants in the region. “We are most happy with the in-roads we have made into the market and are planning for further expansion.
