Sweden involved in the opening of the Mexican energy sector

an image
The Swedish industry predicted good opportunities when the Mexican energy sector opened up for private investors. Business Sweden’s office in Mexico has had an active approach from the start and has promoted the new opportunities on the market for the Swedish companies.

The recently approved energy reform in Mexico has created potential for cooperation between Swedish companies and dominant local companies. Business Sweden arranged a number of activities during 2014 and 2015 to take advantage of the new reform. The main purpose with the activities was to identify the key publicly held actor within oil and gas named PEMEX and the electricity company CFE. During these events Swedish companies such as Atlas Copco, Bycosin, Gunnebo, Sandvik and Volvo construction & equipment participated.

The study identified opportunities

Business Sweden in Mexico has also arranged various projects with the purpose of educating themselves to what great business opportunities the new energy reform implies, but also to present Swedish technology and expertise within the area. By performing a comprehensive study of the Mexican energy sector as a first step, business opportunities could be identified. The study was presented during the second edition of PEMEX expo at the Swedish Pavilion in April 2014. The event gave the Swedish participating companies the opportunity to meet with management and project developers at PEMEX but they also got the chance to meet other potential customers.

- We appreciate the effort from Business Sweden for the coordination of the event and for giving us the opportunity to meet key people on PEMEX, says Marco Berggren, CEO of Bycosin AB.

Close relationship with PEMEX

In the beginning of 2015, as a part of the planned activities for the promotion of Swedish solutions in the Mexican oil and gas industry, Business Sweden arranged a workshop with PEMEX’s strategic purchasing department. The purpose of the activities was to inform Swedish companies about PEMEX’s procurement processes and to present the Swedish technology and expertise within international markets.

- The last two years we have developed a close relationship with PEMEX, which made it possible for Sweden to be the first country that organized a workshop with PEMEX’s purchasing department since the energy reform was introduced. The workshop clearly showed that Swedish expertise can help PEMEX to meet the challenges that the Mexican energy sector is facing, says Nicolas Urbina, Consultant at Business Sweden in Mexico.

Commercial and political approach

Business Sweden’s work to promote Swedish technology and expertise in the energy sector continues. In May 2015 a Smart Grid seminar was organized to position and promote Swedish companies and their products and services, the seminar was held in cooperation with CFE and the Mexican Ministry of Energy. The event ended with a cocktail at the Swedish residence, just in time for the arrival of the Swedish Energy Minister Ibrahim Baylan.

- Smart Grid Seminar shows how Business Sweden combines a business and political approach and creates arenas where decision-makers from both the private and public sector meet to discuss business opportunities, development and the future, says Olof Hällerman, Trade Commissioner, Business Sweden in Mexico.
