Trade and investment delegation to Ethiopia

The Embassy of Sweden Addis Ababa and Business Sweden - The Swedish Trade & Invest Council - invite you to participate in a Trade and Investment delegation to Ethiopia, taking place in Addis Ababa 15-17 of May 2013. The delegation will be headed by Mr. Gunnar Oom, State Secretary for Trade, with the purpose of presenting strong business opportunities for Swedish companies interested in doing business in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is one of the fastest growing countries in the world, with an official annual average GDP growth rate of 10% over the past 9 years. The country has its focus on maintaining its pace using the Growth and Transformation Plan (2010 – 2015) where below listed sectors are prioritized with many ambitious targets and projects. These sectors will also be in focus in the delegation:

  • Infrastructure (May 15-16)

  • Information & Communications Technology (May 15-16)

  • Textile and leather manufacturing (May 15-16)

  • Energy (May 16-17)

The Ethiopian investments in the infrastructure sector are three times higher than the African average. 21,5 bn USD in road investments and rail investments of 6,7 bn USD are needed over the next 15 years to make sure infrastructure is available and of quality for the whole country. Access and quality is also of priority in the Energy and ICT sectors. Here the largest opportunities exist in hydropower, where only 5% of the capacity currently is utilized, but also in wind, solar and geothermal energy where several projects are already on going. Within ICT, community access and service delivery, e-services and the construction of a major ICT park are part of the implementing strategies and opportunities.

During the past years, the textile and leather manufacturing industry have received a strong interest from international actors whom, while enjoying generous investment incentives, are largely investing in the sector. Ethiopia has one of the largest livestock populations in the world which serves as a strong raw material base for the leather industry. By 2015 it is expected that the production capacity of tannery, textile and garments will increase by additional 90%.

The preliminary programme is described on the following page. When finalizing the programme, consideration will be taken to the suggestions given by the participating companies. We look forward to your early response, no later than April 15, 2013.
