LARGE INVESTMENTS BY INTRODUCING HIGH SPEED DATA SERVICES THROUGH 3G

In 2003 Iraq was the only country in the Middle East that did not have a national cell phone network. Since then, the sector has expanded rapidly and is now one of the most fast growing industries in the whole MENA region. Large foreign investments, made by the three main mobile operators, have contributed to the big success story of mobile services and telecoms in post-war Iraq with mobile phone penetration currently at more than 80 percent of Iraq’s 32 million inhabitants. Iraq has one of the lowest rates of internet penetration and usage in the MENA region with only 2% of broadband access due to the lack of a functioning fixed line service. This has contributed to the fast expansion in such a short period and a deployment of new technologies. Advanced mobile data services are perceived as the next big business opportunity for the whole ICT sector since it could quickly be the primary way for Iraqis to access high speed internet. Licenses for 3G services are expected to be awarded to the mobile operators by the end of 2014 which will allow an introduction of such services. A deployment of 3G services will require upgrades of the mobile network to a total value of approximately USD 500 million yearly in new investments over the next coming years.
