28 May Johannesburg

Healthcare Visiting Programme in South Africa

Business Sweden in South Africa would like to invite your company to participate in a full day visiting programme on the 28th of May 2014 in Johannesburg and Pretoria in conjunction with Africa Health - the largest healthcare event on the African continent.

The South African Healthcare System

South Africa’s healthcare system consists of a large under-resourced and overused public sector and a much smaller well-funded and well-equipped private sector. The government has decided to create a National Health Insurance (NHI) system, designed to ensure that all citizens of South Africa have access to essential healthcare. NHI aimed at improving access to public health care service. This will cost ZAR 235 billion to implement and will fund the building of six new hospitals while refurbishing 1967 other public health facilities over a 14 year period.

South Africa’s private healthcare sector is the by far most advanced in Sub-Saharan Africa and of high international standard containing high-tech solutions and a skilled workforce. Around 20% of the populations rely on the private sector for their healthcare. The private sector accounts for a surprisingly large proportion of healthcare spending – an estimated 60%.

According to the South African law, when it comes to medical devices, no approval in South Africa is needed if the devices are FDA or CE approved. However, if it is an electronic device, this has to be approved. The application process is fairly simple and no fee is charged for submitting an application. Provided that all the required documentation has been provided, about 3-4 weeks should be allowed for the processing of an application. For more information on this, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The Visiting Programme

The visiting programme will give your company the opportunity to meet with key people at two of the largest private hospitals in South Africa as well as relevant people at the Department of Health. The day will end with a networking reception at the Swedish Ambassador´s residence in Pretoria. This cocktail reception will give your company the opportunity to network with Swedish health care companies that are already present in South Africa as well as relevant people in the industry.

Please click here for a detailed programme for the 28th of May.

The purpose of the visiting programme is to gain a better understanding of the private hospitals needs and procurement processes and to establish the right contacts for future business. The objective with the meeting with Department of Health is to gain first-hand information on the department future plans for South Africa´s health sector.

Please note that Business Sweden in South Africa will not be exhibiting at the Africa Health so it is up to the companies to register and participate.
