In India, the State Ministry for Health and Family Welfare is the nodal agency for administration of the health care delivery system.

The delegation will focus on promoting Swedish health care products and services and act as a door opener for Swedish companies interested in working with the state governments and their owned hospitals. The delegation will meet and interact with high-level representatives and decision makers from the State Governments and the public hospitals. The delegation is very much customized and meetings will be based on the needs of the participating organizations.

Sweden – India Health Cooperation

In the beginning of 2009 Sweden and India signed a Memorandum of Understanding on health care and public health. Since then there have been strong commitments to strengthen the links between our two countries and support collaborations in health based on reciprocity and mutual benefit. Several result-oriented activities have led to the creation of both joint projects and business for Swedish players in India. In December 2012, a preparatory delegation was made to Maharashtra and Karnataka and this coming delegation is a follow up on the contacts and dialogues that were initiated.

Opportunities in Maharashtra and Karnataka

The health care sector is rapidly emerging as one of the mainstays of the Indian economic growth. In the coming years the industry is likely to witness a compound annual growth rate of around 17%-18% and is expected to be worth around SEK 1700 billion by 2016. The growth is mainly driven by various government programs that are focusing on provision of affordable health care services to the country´s billion plus population.

The state governments in Maharashtra and Karnataka have a comparatively well develop health care infrastructure. Both state governments have shown keen interest in working with Swedish companies and institutions in order to develop the health care situation in their states. Lifestyle related diseases are highly prioritized in both states, and focus areas are cancer care, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. The state governments have also indicated an interest to work closer to Sweden in the areas of infection control, HIV, elderly care and mother- and child health. Medical technology, adapted for the rural environment is highly demanded.
