22 Apr Berlin, Germany

Smart Urban Regions

The Embassy of Sweden in Germany and Business Sweden kindly invite you to participate in a one day seminar on the potential of smart urban regions within the future energy system. The event takes place at the Nordic Embassies in Berlin on 22 April 2013.

Urban regions are already the main energy consumers in Western Europe and their role within the energy system will continue to grow with the current urbanisation trend. In addition to the challenges often associated with urban regions there are also plenty of opportunities. Managing local sources of production centrally to improve grid quality – also known as the virtual power plant – is one example of this. Encouraging active consumers to relieve temporary pressure on the grid is another.

The following topics will be discussed in a panel debate during the morning session:

  • Northern Europe’s urban regions in an energy context

  • Technologies available for using the consumption patterns and decentral generation of the urban regions, with the aim to optimize the electricity grid usage

  • Possible way forward in Northern Europe and potential cooperation areas between Germany and Sweden

The afternoon will begin with a guided tour through the exhibition “Innovative Sweden” followed by a study visit to a nearby net service site in cooperation with Vattenfall. After this, there will be time for networking as well as individual business discussions.
