Nigeria has been ranked as one of four major investment destinations and growth areas in the world. It is also the seventh most populated country in the world and by the end of 2013, its population will hit 170 million, however 60% of its population has no access to electricity.
Nigeria’s Vision 20:2020 has identified power (electricity and alternative energy) as a major challenge in constraining economic growth and development in Nigeria. The Total proposed investment in the power sector until 2014 is BUSD 28. In March 2013, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) announced plans to finance power projects in Nigeria including 3 – 5 Independent Power Plants (IPP) for at least 1,500 megawatts of new generation capacity. The state owned facilities in the power sector are also in the last stages of privatization.
