The automotive industry in Mexico
Mexico is the 8th largest producer of light vehicles in the world. A significant shift in cost competitiveness is behind Mexico’s manufacturing revival. A decade ago, average direct manufacturing costs in China were estimated to be 6 percentage points cheaper than Mexico’s, according to the BCG Global Manufacturing Cost-Competitiveness Index. Now, Mexico is estimated to be 4 percentage points cheaper. In fact, Mexico’s manufacturing cost structure improved the most of any of the 25 economies in BCGs index.
Except its cost competiveness Mexico also offers a strategic location for the North and South American markets as well as free-trade agreements with 44 nations, more than any other nation, including the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and the European Union.
According to many OEMs there is a lack of Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers to support the growth in Mexico. Despite high levels of FDIs last years there is still a common view that the value chain is still for improvement. During 2014 it was registered a total import activity of auto parts of 36 K Million USD while the total export was of 56.6 K Million USD.
