Business Sweden in cooperation with the Ambassadors of Sweden for Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire, organizes an international conference focusing on the mining sector in French-speaking West Africa on 8-9 October 2014. The event aims to give Swedish companies privileged access to high level decision makers from public and private mining companies covering the West African Markets. Furthermore, it creates a platform for knowledge sharing and relation building among the participants.
West Africa experiences the fastest growth of exploration in the continent
The West African mining sector is estimated to show continued growth in 2014, driven by increased demand for commodities from emerging economies.
Despite abundant mining project opportunities in West Africa, several countries in that region remain under-explored. Excluding small-scale, subsistence-based mining operations, there are about 253 mines in production and exploration in West Africa.
The mining landscape in this region is becoming crowded with mining projects; however, there are not enough suppliers of equipment and mining technology to meet demand. Procurement managers of large and small mining companies express a need for sourcing alternatives and more product variety in West Africa, and state the inadequate supply of parts and equipment as a major obstacle in the carrying out of projects.
Background and vision
Business Sweden has been establishing contacts with the mining sector during the first half of 2014, in order to secure the participation of the main players in our six focus markets at the West Africa Mining Summit. Our aim is that we during these two days will have the opportunity to identify new ideas on how to further strengthen Swedish presence in Mali, Mauritania, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Guinea based on participant companies’ challenges and ambitions in the markets.
