The Oil and Gas Sector in Angola
Angola’s economy has been one of the fastest growing in the world since the end of the civil war in 2002. This past decade of peace has been characterized by an average annual GDP growth of double digits and this is expected to continue as Angola attracts more investments. Angola’s impressive economic growth rate is being driven by its energy sector, especially the oil sector. Oil production and its supporting activities contribute almost half of the nation’s gross domestic product and 90% of exports.
The Angolan hydrocarbon market has made several steps forward during recent years. According to current reports Angola's hydrocarbons industry is set to enjoy strong growth in the coming years. Examples of projects include exploration in subsalt basins, and export of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas).
Angola’s oil production will continue to accelerate in the coming years due to the numerous fields scheduled to enter production. Further investments are expected in construction and refurbishment of refineries in Luanda, Lobito and Soyo.
Sonangol is the dominant stakeholder within Angola’s oil and gas sector, as the largest equity holder, regulator and sub-contractor in every product and service rendered through its web of oil and gas subsidiaries producers and refineries. Sonangol is therefore a very important key player when doing business in the oil & gas sector in Angola.
Business Opportunities for Swedish companies
Business Sweden in Southern Africa is working to build knowledge and networks in Angola and continue to identify good business opportunities for Swedish companies.
Competition is still limited in Angola and there are good opportunities for astute investors, for example Swedish companies that are able to contribute with capacity as well as advanced services and products. The business opportunities lies within several areas e.g: prefabricated steel and tubular structures, components, electronics, and specific products and solutions for the oil & gas extraction, technical consultants and staffing for both engineering expertise and skilled industrial workers who can perform tasks onshore and on board platforms.
