The environmental situation in Romania is characterized by deficiencies in environmental infrastructure, particularly in the area of urban waste management, district heating and water treatment. The environmental quality in certain areas is below EU standards, mainly due to the lack of investment in the past years. Awareness is however increasing among decision makers for the need act in order to improve the environmental situation.
Land filling is the main method for municipal waste disposal and the majority of the landfills do not comply with environmental standards. From April this year a new tax of 25 EUR/ton will be introduced on waste deposited in landfills, which is expected to lead to an increase in incineration of waste. Apart from opportunities within waste management and district heating there are opportunities in several other fields such as wind, solar and biomass related projects. The investments are driven by the 4.5 bn EUR EU-funds for the environmental sector, available between 2007 and 2013.
